Target Canada to offer deeper liquidation discounts this Thursday

Looks like there are bigger sales in store for Target Canada shoppers.

Discounts on regular priced goods will deepen to 20 to 40 per cent on Thursday, a store manager tells CBC News.

He believes the price cuts will happen in all locations. The only exception will be Apple products, which will only be discounted by 10 per cent.

Crews will be working overtime on Wednesday night and Thursday morning to post new sales signs throughout his store, the manager said.

30% cutoff

Since the start of liquidation sales, savings have not budged above 30 per cent off regular-priced merchandise.

Some goods dropped in price last week, but not below the 30 per cent mark. And many food items, furniture, and toiletries remain discounted by only 10 per cent.

This has upset some shoppers who thought a liquidation sale would mean deep discounts from the start.

"Most of the store is just 10 per cent [off]. You figure by going out with a bang there would be upwards of 30, 40 per cent off, so kind of disappointing," said Toronto Target shopper Christina Straight.

"They didn't realize it is a liquidation sale and they didn't treat it as such. I was expecting more along the lines of between 30 to 40 per cent throughout the store," said customer Dalene Benatar.

Shoppers might be happier come Thursday when prices are expected to drop by as much as 40 per cent.

Liquidators won't confirm

U.S.-based Target announced last month that it was closing its 133 stores in Canada. A group of three liquidation companies is overseeing the clearout sale.

A spokeswoman for the liquidation companies would not confirm any pending price discounts.

"There is no preset discount schedule. Merchandise price reductions are determined based upon sales and inventory levels," Elizabeth Sarhaddi-Blue of Boston-based liquidator Gordon Brothers Group said in an email.

Buy now or hold off?

When the liquidation sale began, the three companies sent out a news release, encouraging shoppers to start buying now.

"We encourage consumers to shop early to take advantage of the best selection of products and great savings available throughout the stores," it read.

But some customers, like Benatar, have walked out of Target dissatisfiedand empty-handed. Benatar was looking for bedding and bathroom supplies and said she would check back when prices drop.

When asked if she was concerned she'd miss out on the best selection, she responded, "It's a chance I'm willing to take."
