标题: I NEED WELL-EDUCATED FRIENDS
I need well-educated friends to share viewpoints, and exchange opinions. I wish that my friends are at least university students.

I am a mature man. I graduated from Concordia University in August 2006. My major is Finance. At present I am an English tutor. Most of my students are studying at Concordia University. I also teach an English course for new immigrants, as a volunteer.

Before that, I was a graduate of Hong Kong Polytechnic in Mechanical Engineering. Besides, I had been a prosecutor in British courts in Hong Kong, where English was the only official language at my time.

My interests include human characters and behaviour. To that end, I read widely. In fact I love reading. My favourite sport is Ping Pong.

Please contact Francis at the following email address.
sochitim29@hotmail.com

Thanks,

Francis

Interested.

two questions: 1. can you speak Mandarine? 2. can you post one of your articles?

if you can speak Mandarine, and your article meets my standard, i will contact you.

Hi, Betterview:

Thank you for your interest.

I speak Mandarin, but not perfect, becasue I came from Hong Kong.

It is not my intention to win friends by posting my articles. We may, however, start discussing some current issues to see we have some viewpoints to share. You may choose any topic.

Truly yours,

Francis

I was taking a cost accounting course 3 or 4 yrs ago in Concordia and there was a classmate who had the similar background you described in previous posts. I browse this website occasinally and happened to read your post. It's your name that reminded me of that classmate.

Hi, Samlfu:

Thank you for writing the message. It is not important whether I am the person you met or not. The important thing is that we may share some viewpoints in life now and in the future.

I wish that you live a happy life. Speaking happiness, I don't know your own definition. Different people have different definitions about happiness. In fact, it is an interesting topic.

Wishing to talk to you again,

Francis

Hi, Friends:

Thank you for your time in reading my messages.

If I am wrong, please point it out. I am learning too. No one can say his or her English is perfect, I suppose.

As a tutor of English, I have to write conventional English, or formal, as some people call it; otherwise my students would not get good grades in their exams.

Furthermore, every person has his or her own style in writing. In this aspect, I am rather convervative. I don't like English with too many colloguial expressions.

Finally, I don't know how to proofread what I write in this forum. I admit that sometimes I write in a rush. However, I will try my best to write carefully in the future.

Once again, thank you very much.

Francis

Hi Francis,

It seems that you are looking for an Eng study partner more than a friend. In terms of making friends, I perfer ones with who I can talk in my first language which is definitely not Eng. I dont feel like to  express myself in Eng, especially in particular cases only sharing between friends. If for study purpose, it's another story.

BTW, thanks for your kindly wish, and the same to you!

Hi, Friends:

Thank you for your time in reading my messages. (This sentence is grammatically correct, but not a usual expression. Thank you for taking your time to read my messages, or thank you for your time to answer me.)

If I am wrong, please point it out. (please correct me if I am wrong. If you find mistakes in my messages, please point them out. Please point out if I am wrong)  I am learning too. No one can say his or her English is perfect, I suppose. (not necessary, everyone knows  it).

As a tutor of English (As an English tutor), I have to write conventional English, or formal, as some people call it; (Wordy. As an English tutor, I prefer formal writing. )otherwise my students would not get good grades in their exams. (logically this sentence is wrong. How ur writing style would affect students' exam grades? Readers would get confused. BTW, personally I think your writing sytle will only mislead your students and even lead to disastrous consequences on their writing performance. Take some esl writing courses ASAP!!)

Furthermore, every person has his or her own style in writing (writing style). In this aspect, I am rather convervative. I don't like English with too many colloguial expressions. (my opinion, you should learn colloguial expressions. they are very useful in speaking and writing. It's not a matter of writing style. It's about making your writings simple and clear on a forum.)

Finally, I don't know how to proofread what I write in this forum. I admit that sometimes I write in a rush. However, I will try my best to write carefully in the future. (you are not writing an argument. These transition words are unneccessary).

Once again, thank you very much.

Hi YK_OU,

Pls try to be nice.

He only wants to make friends, not to show off his English.

If you want to make friends with him, just do it; if you don't, just go away.
Your written English is better than his, which doesn't justify your being rude.

Agree.

As an English Tutor, he'd better improve his English. People should appreciate OU's correction.

the guy is looking for friends, but people transform this corner into an english class. we chinese like judging?!

before correct others, take a second to correct yourself!

the english language skills are not so important to impress a person. the only thing which can impress is the personal touch of your language. we call this the soul of your language.

from his language, i find sincerity and honesty. and from others', i find only narrowness and arrogance.

1. As an English Tutor, he'd better improve his English. People should appreciate OU's correction. This is why Ou-YK criticized LZ's English skills

2. You are judging other people, aren't you?

3. i disagree to other points, but have no interest in  discussing  them.

作者: samlfu    时间: 2007-5-17 19:28
"the english language skills are not so important to impress a person" I agree with you. But Eng writing skills become a vital factor in communication when using writen Eng as a way to exchange viewpoints with friends as LZ suggested.

"the guy is looking for friends, but people transform this corner into an english class. we chinese like judging?!" People are judging each other in every aspect of life explicitly or implicitly, to some extent. In my own judging, I expect that LZ's Eng is better than other because he is an Eng tutor. LZ already put in place his criteria for making friend, and in turn other people express their own judgement correspond with LZ's. It's a 2-way communication and people invloved are better off.

"from his language, i find sincerity and honesty. and from others', i find only narrowness and arrogance" I take for granted that every one is sincere and honest here. I dont think anyone intended to look down on others, so I totally disagree with the sencond half of your judgement.

I am also a graduate from Concordia University and I know how important an Eng tutor is for those stutents struggling to improve their Eng. As most of his stutends are studying in Concordia University, I wish LZ become a qualified Eng tutor soon.

Please forgive my bluntness for saying something off topic. I would like to make friends with you guys if we can communicate in Mandarine or Cantonese. Keep me posted if you think we can make it.

其实,英文好也不代表教养好。
诸位看客,发现没有,都是一名多人在用,好不容易逮到机会把自己的老外男友什么的,拿出来用一下,在这里吓唬下英文崇拜者,得,楼主,你还不如就用中文。

Hello, I like your viewpoint about friends:wink:

i think if we can share and exchange our opinions about life, and everything in our life, then language is not that important. by the way, I won't focus on some "stupid" grammar errors when I talk with some truely friends; but if they are not my friends, then his/her "blar blar blar" means nothing to me.

I am not expecting my friends to accept my opinion completely, but I wish we can respect each other. it's said the opposite word to "love" is not "hate" but "indifference". I agree with this.

talk to you later

Hello Francis:

actually, I quoted from 张爱玲,a famous female writers from shanghai. but maybe there is better translation.

it is not that easy to find a friend with whom we can talk freely and happily. I often feel dispointed when I know a person much better--maybe others have the exactly same feeling about me  . anyway, we shouldn't stop looking for new friends and searching the new happiness in our lives.   I will also cherish the similarity we share and respect the diversity.

have a nice day

Hi, gracegao123:

The purpose of this thread is what exactly you described in your replies today. I am also interested in what you quoted, i.e., the opposite is love is not hate, but indifference. I never heard of it, but it seems to that it sounds good. I often hear people say that the opposite of love is hate. Your quote gives me a new idea about the relationship between love and indifference.

We may discuss more issues in life in the future.

Thank you very much.

Truly yours,

Francis
