overdrive is the highest gear in the transmission. On most cars the automatic transmission has 3 speeds and Overdrive (forth speed). It allows the engine to have less rpm with higher speed in order to have better fuel efficiency. When you switch it on, you allow the transmission to shift into overdrive mode after the certain speed is reached (usually 30 - 40 mph depending on the load). When it's off, you limit transmission shifting by third speed.
In normal driving condition the overdrive should be always on.
You also may need to switch it off when you want to slowdown using the engine braking, for example, driving downhill.作者: yyzxh 时间: 2004-1-18 23:58

当然是说你的overdrive现在被off了。绝大多数情况下应该使用overdrive,所以通常"o/d off"灯是灭的，除非你有意off它（这时该灯当然就亮了）。作者: 水至清 时间: 2004-1-21 20:35

以前我也有过这个问题,问过修车行的(佳艺),答案正好相反 /D OFF亮时表示O/D已关闭,正常行驶. O/D OFF灭时车已在O/D状态,是车跑高速用的.

打开O/D OFF 灯后,你会发现转速明显上升,动力增强,既此时是低速档.关闭O/D OFF灯后,车进入OVERDRIVE状态,是车在高速行进时用的.
