In North America, a salvage title is a form of vehicle title branding, which notes that the vehicle has been damaged and/or deemed a total loss by an insurance company that paid a claim on it. The criteria for determining when a salvage title is issued differ considerably by each state, province or territory. In a minority of states and Canadian provinces regulations require a salvage title for stolen or vandalized vehicles which are not recovered by police within 21 days. In such cases Insurance companies declare a vehicle total loss and pay off the previous owner;[1] but, in others, it is issued only for losses due to damage. Under some circumstances, a salvage title denotation may be removed or replaced with a Rebuilt Salvage designation;[2] and cars imported to, or exported from, the United States may be issued a clean title regardless of history.
Because a salvage title can be issued to a vehicle with easily repairable problems or no damage whatsoever, the low cost of the salvaged motorcycle or car is appealing to some hobbyists and investors. Experts recommend caution when purchasing a salvaged vehicle, because there may be hidden damage,[3] which, if unrepairable, may render the vehicle a "pile of parts."

Unrebuildable (irrécupérable)

This designation generally applies to a vehicle that has been so severely flooded or damaged that rebuilding it is impossible. Such a vehicle cannot be put into operation nor can it ever be put back on the road. Only its parts may be used.

This designation appears on the vehicle's registration record and certificate following a declaration by the vehicle owner or insurer. This status can also be assigned to an imported vehicle whose record, ownership title or registration certificate indicates that it is unrebuildable.

Under section 188 of the Regulation respecting safety standards for road vehicles, this status must be assigned to damaged vehicles with a monocoque body where the compartment floor or front bulkhead cannot be repaired following a collision, a fire or an immersion.

Severely damaged (gravement accidenté)

This status designates a vehicle that has been so severely damaged that it must be rebuilt. The designation appears on the vehicle's registration record and certificate following a declaration by the vehicle owner, insurer or, in the case of a vehicle originating outside Québec, the administrative authority of that jurisdiction. The vehicle must be rebuilt before it can be used on Québec roads.

Rebuilt (reconstruit)

This status designates a severely damaged vehicle rebuilt in Québec or elsewhere for which a technical compliance certificate and, subsequently, a mechanical inspection certificate have been issued by an SAAQ agent.

Note: The “rebuilt” status can be revoked if the SAAQ, one of its agents or a police officer finds irregularities in the rebuilding record. Even if the vehicle is already in operation, the SAAQ or the police officer could demand that the vehicle owner correct these irregularities. Should the owner refuse, the authorization for road use could be cancelled or the vehicle could be designated as a “severely damaged vehicle” once again.
