This thread is aimed to stir debate over the usefulness in doing research and studying in a canadian / usa university anymore ? The following is just one of my replies to questions posted in Sinoquebec. Please share your ideas, because it is important to give a direction to new immigrants.
<HR style="COLOR: #efefef" SIZE=1><!-- / icon and title --><!-- message -->if you want to stay in Canada forever (well, almost), do not study anything except some training programs. If you want to have a career or your own business in Asia, go for a degree as high as possible. My opinion is that it is better to go for a very practical area, such as engineering.
For a phd in finance, it usually take at least 5-6 years. Finance is the easiest to find a faculty job in a business school and usually the highest paid. However, can you easily find a finance faculty position in a north america b-school ? I have to say it is very difficult. If you can not find a faculty position here, what can you do ? go to an investment bank ? maybe you are too old. You may go to a fund managment company as a quantitative analyst, but you need to face stiff competition from people with a background from statistics, etc.. You can go back to China. But, in China, PHDs in finance can be produced like rats. A professor in a chinese b-school could have 20-30 phds in finance and let them out in 3-4 years. You do not have a good advantage over these people. I do not say a finance phd is not useful. What I mean is that you should think about it carefully before diving into it. Once you make a wrong decision, you could waste your best 5-10 years. |
