Getting into B-School - How do I answer this essay question?
Q--One school asks, "What did you learn most from your years at college?" Huh? Do I describe the actual substance of what I learned most (like supply demand curve, for example)? Or, do I put down extra-currics? Sounds like an easy essay but it is very hard to write.
A--How about skills or lessons that made who or what you are today? During college I learned how to manage my time, and can effectively manage my time at work now. Or, I learned that everything has a price - I drank too much my first two years. I really had good times, but had to work extra hard the next two years to bring my grades up when I realized that good times are nothing but a memory and won't pay for a new car. (please be personal, do not describe yourself as a God or an all-able)
A--I don't think there is a right or wrong answer. You should write this essay in a such way that it answers the question but somehow tells the adcom what a great person you are and why they should admit you.
Getting into B-School - Should I contact professors at B-schools?
Q--Just wanted to get a feel for what people think about getting in touch with Professors at schools where you are going to apply? Is it a good thing, bad thing, or totally ugly thing? I would ask questions about the courses they teach and how they might help me achieve my career goals, etc. Any suggestions would be welcome.
A--Do not call those profs, maybe an email to set up a face to face talk. If the professor is impressed with the knowledge and interest level displayed in your e-mail, he might contact you or if you are lucky he might contact the admissions committee to put in a good word for you. The key is to make your questions as brief and detailed as possible, to show genuine interest. Also, if you don't get a reply right away, that could just mean it slipped their mind, so don't be afraid to send a reminder message, but please do not bomb their mail boxes, otherwise, it hurts.
A--The responses may be underwhelming as profs are usually pretty busy - I would recommend sitting in on a few classes that are of interest so you can see for yourself. I think that would give you a better feel than what a prof would say. Meeting a prof is a double-blade, the prof might offer a great help to your admission. meanwhile, you are taking the risk that he may kill your application, if your presentation is not satisfying. Personally, I do not suggest that.
