You must have spent a fortune on this car.  It is equiped on the some of the luxury cars like Accura, BMW and Merc...
You can put it on manual and change the gears by hand or leave it in auto and do nothing when you drive. Or let me drive it around and show you how to do it:-)

感谢各位大虾的回贴，我的车是SUBARU legacy 94, 手动可以用，但我不敢用，怕使用不当损坏变速箱。所以只好一直用自动档。

Are you sure it is auto/manual change but not the selection to 4 wheel drive. Never heard that 94 Subaru is equiped with auto/manual selection.

我在国内开过几个月手自一体的车--中国自己知识产权的车--东方之子。自动档的车是根据速度自动换档，所以加速不是特别快。如果你想短时间内加速，就要使用手动，否则就一直使用自动就行了。这里跟国内不一样，国内是分秒必争，这里交通情况这么好，我看用自动就很好。这里不好是，道路太差了，也不修修。

是的，在换档的把手侧部有一个按钮写着：manual，按下去仪表盘上的manual灯亮，这时当车在行走中随时可以换档。我只是怕不小心换到 R 档上。
