Someone put it this way about boxing. I think the same can be said for other sports.
".......
I think this probably has to do more with economics than race. Boxing is a brutal unforgiving sport with a shades of the underworld always peeking in at the sidelines. The primary fighting sport for the last century it has always attracted the poor working man (See Rocky Balboa the movie as a perfect fictional example). Yet in real life, the people who tend to end up in boxing are from a poorer economic background, regardless of color. Mike Tyson was a teenage delinquent with abuse issues. Pacquaio's father left the family at a young age and young Manny was forced to sell food on the streets as a kid. Julio Cesar Chavez, the legendary Mexican fighter, grew up in a train car in dire poverty. He resolved to bring his family out of poverty.
So boxing provided a way for these kids out of their miserable worlds to something better through violence.
......."
When someone is from a poor economic background, sport is one way out to improve the financial future.
That applies to any country.
