There are two kinds of meningococcal vaccines available in Canada. They each protect people from different strains (types) of the germ:

One is more effective in babies and young children. It only protects against one type of the meningococcus germ (type c). In Canada, the vaccine is available under these brand names: Menjugate (Merck Frosst), NeisVac-C (Shire Biologics) and Meningitec (Wyeth Canada).
The other vaccine only protects children 5 years and older, teenagers and adults. But it may cover up to 4 different types of the germ (brand names: Mencevax AC, GlaxoSmithKline and Menomune, sanofi pasteur).
