The present is to request your presence and that of our association at an afternoon activity on Sunday, 27 February 2005 organized by the Chinese community of Quebec and the City of Montreal to recognize the sacrifices and social, cultural and economic contributions of the early Chinese Canadian pioneers who arrived in Quebec province and Canada before 1923 as laborers and who were affected by the Chinese Head Tax and the Chinese Exclusion Act which was enacted on July 2, 1923.
Starting at 14h00, meeting place at Complexe Guy Favreau, entrance rue de Lagauchetière, we will provide a short historical tour of Montreal Chinatown for media and VIPs such as yourself, and later on from 16h00- 18h00, an official ceremony will be held at Montreal City Hall, 275 Notre-Dame Street East commemorating these early Chinese Canadian pioneers and their families.
The ceremony is co-organized by City of Montreal and community associations, such as the Chinese Canadian Redress Alliance, the Chinese Family Services of Greater Montreal (CFSGM), the National Congress of Chinese Canadians- Quebec Section, the Federation of Chinese Canadian Professionals of Quebec, the Montreal Chinese Community United Centre, and the Centre for Research- Action and Race Relations (CRARR), in support of the Chinese Head Tax and the Chinese Exclusion Act Redress campaign, which calls upon the Canadian government to officially acknowledge and redress the hardship and contributions of these individuals and their families. |
