May 30, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m

;) ;) ;) What a Sunday!

Montreal, April 2, 2004 – Quebecor inc., Alcan and the Société de transport de Montréal invite all Montrealers to visit the 30 museums that will be offering absolutely free admission on Sunday, May 30, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., as part of the 18th edition of Montreal Museums Day</B>.

Quebecor inc. has joined this museum fest organized by the Board of Montreal Museum Directors, as proud presenter of the event in collaboration with Alcan and the Société de transport de Montréal. Using its extensive media network, Quebecor inc. will help promote the broadest possible access to culture, an objective pursued by Montreal museums since the first edition of this special event in 1987. Residents throughout the Greater Montreal region will be able to celebrate International Museums Day, established by UNESCO, thanks to Quebecor inc., Alcan and the Société de transport de Montréal.

As they have for the past 17 years, thousands of Montrealers will take advantage of this day-long event to visit exhibitions at the various museums around the city and to take in the special activities many of them have organized. Whether they’re interested in visual art, history, science or general culture, visitors of all ages will find something to interest them. And they’re bound to be impressed by the quality and diversity of everything on offer. It’s also the ideal opportunity to explore some lesser-known museums, all of them home to fabulous heritage and cultural collections.

Popular TV host France Beaudoin, a member of the Quebecor family, was delighted to be asked to serve as spokesperson for this widely attended family event, which gives all Montrealers a chance to rediscover their city through its museums, the artists they showcase, the history they reveal and the many different visions of the world they offer. “I love the idea that this ‘open house’ will allow everyone to visit all these places where they might not have gone otherwise. I see Montreal Museums Day as a chance for all Montrealers to discover museums’ many different faces, to get a glimpse of their fabulous variety of public activities and to be amazed by everything that’s available to them.”

Francine Senécal, Vice-Chair of the City of Montreal Executive Committee and member responsible for Culture and Heritage, agreed with pleasure to serve as the event’s honorary patron. She is enthusiastically encouraging her fellow elected officials to actively support Montreal Museums Day, reminding them of the major role played by museums on Montreal’s cultural scene and the unique opportunity this day offers everyone to discover our city’s rich heritage.

Every year since 2000, Montreal Museums Day has attracted over 90,000 visitors. Over the years it has become a huge event, kicking off the cultural side of the summer season in style.

Follow the guides: five free bus routes!

Montrealers interested in visiting several museums without having to worry about parking will be pleased to know that free shuttle buses have been laid on by the Board of Montreal Museum Directors in collaboration with the Société de transport de Montréal. All you have to do is make your way to the Journal de Montréal head office, at 4545 Frontenac, the terminus for the bus routes and the information centre. Once there, visit the Alcan tent for information on all the activities at the 30 participating museums. In fact, why not make your life as easy as possible and take public transit to get there: from the Mont-Royal metro station, take bus 97, Mont-Royal East; from the Frontenac metro station, take bus 94, D’Iberville North. Ready for a guided tour of the best of Montreal culture?

For more details

You’ll find everything you need to plan your day (itineraries, activities, addresses, times, telephone numbers and more) on the Montreal Museums Day Website starting in early May, at www.montrealmuseums.org. There will also be links from the Canoe site, www.canoe.qc.ca, leading to the Montreal Museum Days Website. Or you can call Tourisme Québec, by dialling (514) 873-2015 or 1-877-BONJOUR if you live outside Montreal.

Montreal Museums Day brochures will be available starting in early May at the 30 participating museums, Montreal public libraries and Maisons de la Culture, various CLSCs in Montreal and Archambault and SuperClub Vidéotron stores in Greater Montreal. Look for an insert in the Journal de Montréal, too.

Montreal Museums Day is being presented by Quebecor inc. in collaboration with Alcan and the Société de transport de Montréal, the official carrier. The event is made possible by financial support from the Service du développement culturel et de la qualité du milieu de vie de la Ville de Montréal, the Arts Council of Montreal and the Ministère de la culture et des communications du Québec, under its Villes et Villages d’art et de patrimoine program. The organizers also wish to acknowledge the generous support of all the Quebecor inc. subsidiaries. They also extend their gratitude to Tourisme Québec, Liberty Yogurt, Guidatour, Cellular Solution, Publicité Sauvage and the Réseau de transport de Longueuil.

Montreal Museums Day is organized by the Board of Montreal Museum Directors as part of Musées en fête, organized by the Société des musées québécois. Both activities coincide with International Museums Day, established by UNESCO.
