国际先驱导报》：一些华人的冷漠，彻底激怒了约瑟夫。这位曾因拍摄《希特勒日记》而声名远播的脑神经医学专家，在公开信中发出了一连串的怒吼：“一些中国人对此是冷漠的，一些中国人和部分机构不仅不合作，反而对我有敌意。”“这不是一部我约瑟夫个人的电影，这部电影属于所有的中国人，属于全世界。”失望之情，溢于言表。


近一个月来，朗恩·约瑟夫说自己总在重复地做着一个梦。

梦境的背景一片漆黑，放眼望去，竟是堆成山的尸体、头颅和头骨，有灰色的烟雾弥漫在四周。一个戴黑色头巾的中国女人，站在约瑟夫的面前，他认得她的脸—张纯如。这个以《南京大屠杀》一书闻名，却因患重度抑郁于2004年自杀的华裔女作家，面色惨白，伸出胳膊指着那些尸体，对约瑟夫说了四个字：“记住历史。”

“我越来越能理解张的痛苦。”8月27日，这位毕业于芝加哥大学医学系的心理学博士告诉记者，“我能够想象张纯如当初经历的一切，她为什么要抛弃自己的生命。” 无论是在梦境中还是现实里，朗恩·约瑟夫和张纯如人生轨迹的交叠，都来源于第二次世界大战中的一幕惨剧—发生于1937年的南京大屠杀。在过去的20年中,作为一个二战史的爱好者，约瑟夫从美国各地的档案馆、图书馆、日本人拍摄的影像中获取创作素材，个人投资并制作了一部名为《南京梦魇—南京大屠杀》的纪录片。

随后，在2005年，约瑟夫将这部片子上传到网络世界中，供网民免费下载和观看。如今，根据数家知名视频网站提供的数据，世界各地收看和下载该片的网民，已达到400万人次，在世界上最大的视频网站Youtube的“热门讨论排行榜”上，这部片子位列第九名，网民的评论已达数万条。


然而，在南京大屠杀发生70年后的2007年8月，约瑟夫却在网络上连续发表了三封公开信，用这种特殊的方式，再一次把这部无数道视线关注下的历史纪录片连同他自己，推向了风口浪尖。

一）

2007年8月1日，约瑟夫对外界发出了他的第一封公开信。信中称，由于这部电影的制作与发行完全由其本人独立运营，在保证影片中立客观的同时，也导致了他在财务方面的赤字和巨额损失。在半年内，如果无法筹集到足够的资金来继续支付版权费和其他维护费用，他将不得不从网络上撤下该片，并停止一切市场推广工作。

根据约瑟夫及其助手、该片的中文制作人吴海燕向本报记者提供的数据，从2005年至今，在这部片子上的投资已经超过10万美元。其中，相当一部分的投资，是用于购买影片中的背景音乐版权。其中最为昂贵的一首古典音乐，花费了65000美元。

约瑟夫称，在这部电影中，他总共使用了7首不同的音乐，如果按照正常的商业片价格，这些音乐将花费他数十万美元。经过谈判协商后，版权公司同意降价，但音乐的使用期限被限制在2007年12月前。

“最好的影片要用最好的音乐。”约瑟夫无奈地说，“但我已经无力继续购买这些音乐的版权了。”但他不愿向记者透露具体的音乐名称和版权公司的信息，因为“这涉及到商业隐私权和保护影片的考虑”。

除此之外，这部影片的官方网站www．RapeofNanking．info和www．RapeofNanking．tv，每年的运转和维持费用接近5000美元。2006年12月，由于访问量急剧增加，这两个网站曾被迫关闭，随后，约瑟夫加宽了租用的带宽，才恢复了正常访问。

如今，这两个网站的月访问量近10万人次，为西方社会提供了一个有效了解日本侵华历史的窗口。但由于入不敷出，它们也面临着年底被关闭的危险。

约瑟夫和吴海燕原本还计划制作《南京梦魇》的日文版，“向日本国民普及真实的二战历史”。他们曾于今年7月与一个华裔日籍女博士谈妥了合作项目，并向对方提供了来回机票和食宿，但后来发现，对方带来了泳衣，只是想到加州的海边免费度假和游玩。在浪费了数千美元之后，他们不得不取消了这个合作。

“我并不想要寻求外界的资助。”约瑟夫在信中说，“但目前的现实迫使我不得不这样做，因为我不希望看到人们上网后，再也找不到这部电影，或者上我们的网站，发现已经被关闭。”

于是，吴海燕在这封公开信的最后，提供了自己的银行账号。

（二）

“然而，从8月1日到8月15日的半个月时间里，只有不到10个人回应，募集的捐款不到1000美元。”8月27日，吴海燕在电话中向记者回忆，“这真是杯水车薪。”

吴海燕说，在那段时间里，她总看到约瑟夫反复地看着这部耗尽心血的电影，并翻看着那些观众表达鼓励的来信。她听到约瑟夫好几次喃喃自语：“到了离开的时候了，离开了就自由了。”

事情似乎变得越来越糟糕。

在第一封公开信发表后的半个月里，约瑟夫收到了许多网民的电子邮件和网络留言，他们质疑约瑟夫的动机，认为他“本就该为这部电影义务工作，不应该向外界请求帮助”。

一个网民甚至说：“朗恩的动机很简单，就是借着‘南京’求名求利，他对投资回报的追求就是最好的证据……一旦他的名利目标没能达到，他马上就主动撕破对中国人的假面具了。”

更可怕的压力来自一些日本右翼。从片子放上网络的两年来，不断有匿名的网民发表类似的留言——“你应该去死”、“你会死得很惨”、“南京大屠杀根本不存在，是谎言”……

在8月2日的留言版上，一个ID为OCHA（日语，意为绿茶）2001的网民还留下了这么一句话：“You will die like Iris Chang．”（你应该像张纯如一样去死。）

每天都会读到这样的威胁，约瑟夫说，自己在潜意识中真的担心会有灾难降临。而更让人感觉难过的是，“我是一个人在承受这些”。

于是，在8月16日，重压之下的约瑟夫，发出了自己的第二封公开信，在信中，他语气十分激烈地宣称：“这一次我不会再要求帮助，我决定不干了……在8月1日的筹款公告后，我总计收到了大约1000美元的捐款，我将返还给捐款人。在9月1日，我将关闭网站，并从网上撤下这部电影。”

“除了少数的中国人热情捐款协助这部电影的制作外，大部分的中国人对此冷漠甚至有敌意。如果还有中国人想要攻击我，请记住：在美国有超过400万人观看我的纪录片，而且是免费观看，还有谁为南京大屠杀这个主题作了更多的贡献？”

（三）

“我从来没有期望通过这个电影大富大贵。”约瑟夫在接受记者采访时表示，“但是我觉得我付出的劳动，至少应该得到经济上的回报，起码，我该得到一个在市场上自负盈亏的机会。”

从制作这部片子开始，约瑟夫一直都对打开中国和美国的发行市场充满信心，但现实却一再让他失望。

“关于这部电影的国内市场推广，我试过很多办法，但是都行不通。”北京天则书店的图书编辑王立对记者说。

王立的母亲是山东人，她的外祖父从小就和她讲日本人侵华时期在山东的暴行，“我并不仇日，但不可否认，这种国仇家恨，我不可能忘掉。”

2006年年初，王立在国内媒体上看到了有关约瑟夫和《南京梦魇》的报道，随后，她便和吴海燕取得了联系。2007年春节，借着去美国探亲的机会，她前往加州拜访了约瑟夫和吴海燕。

作为一个图书编辑，王立除了表达自己的感动外，还希望约瑟夫能够就“南京大屠杀”写一本书。然而，这个提议意外地遭到了约瑟夫的拒绝，理由是：“我写的不可能超过张纯如。而且，你给我的时间太少了，我的研究还远远不够。”

“当时我感动极了。”王立向记者表示，从事图书出版10多年，她见了国内太多敷衍了事的作者，但像约瑟夫这样认真的人，她还是第一次碰到。于是，她便向约瑟夫和吴海燕提出，希望能帮忙解决该片在国内的销售问题，并得到了同意。

然而，从2007年2月到6月，王立先后联系了国内17家音像出版商，却无一例外地遭到了拒绝。一些出版商是直接回绝，说这样的敏感题材不在考虑范围内；一些出版商称要和领导商量一下，从此再无下文；某省的一家音像公司，“几乎都快谈成了”，但在最后一道终审时又被“毙”掉。

“你可以说是我个人资源有限，也可以说我操作得不够专业。”王立直言，“但十多家公司都拒绝了这个片子，这应该还是能说明一些问题。”

与此同时，在美国寻找发行渠道的约瑟夫和吴海燕也不断碰壁。

此前，约瑟夫曾制作过一部反映犹太人二战遭遇的纪录片《希特勒的日记》，美国媒体和发行商对该片一致叫好。然而，在看到《南京梦魇》后，它们却表示了集体漠视，认为该片“没有市场”、“美国人不会对中国人的悲剧感兴趣”，很多公司甚至连样片都不愿意看。

“所有和这部电影有关的反馈似乎都是绝望的，没有出路的。”约瑟夫说，“这部电影只带给我损失、灾难和痛苦以及无休止的个人攻击，我真希望我从来没有制作过这部电影。”

（四）

8月17日，“陷于绝望之中”的吴海燕，将约瑟夫的第二封公开信，群发给了电子邮箱内通讯录上的近250名联系人，尝试着“最后一搏”。

事情果然出现了转机。

18日早上7点，一个不知名的网友，将吴海燕的信件转贴到了海外最大的华人 BBS“”。这个BBS的用户，大多是一些出国留学的中国学生和一些海外华人，这封信件引起了一场激烈的讨论。

一些声称看过该片的网友同样质疑约瑟夫和他的电影：“《南京梦魇》粗制滥造，有许多不符合历史真相的地方，有些画面选用的重庆大轰炸和东北抗战的场景，中国人民不是对其毁谤中伤，而是无法接受这样不尊重历史的创作，这样的片子即使是一个好的题材，我们也不能接受。”

甚至还有人称，“这是一场骗局，是利用中国人的民族感情来骗钱。”

另一些网民则对约瑟夫表示了支持。他们开始追问捐款的渠道，很多人已经四处转载这封信，并开始往吴海燕的账号里汇钱。

在这些支持的声音里，一位自称“Joshua Tu”（化名）的中国留学生，无疑是其中的代表人物。

18日早上11点左右，这个出国7年，现从事IT行业的中国小伙子，正躺在加州家中的床上上网。这个周末本是加州阳光最好的时候，可原本很惬意的心情，却在看见吴海燕的信件后，一下子变得“很不开心”。

在此之前，Joshua Tu已经看过这部纪录片，并觉得它“太血腥，有些片段后被证明不是南京大屠杀的，有史实错误，中文解说词比较生硬”。

“但我觉得自己有责任，帮助一部关于民族记忆的影片继续生存下去。”Joshua Tu对记者说。

为了让自己冷静下来，他从床上坐了起来，到浴室洗了个澡，然后开始盘算自己能做些什么。下午1点，他拨通了吴海燕的电话。据吴海燕称，这是在第二封公开信发表后，她接到的第一个支持电话。

随后，Joshua Tu在“”发表了关于此事的第一个帖子，他写道：“这部纪录片的水平肯定是不高的，但这是第三方的独立制片。要让世界人民了解到真相，是不是第三方的独立制片的影片更有说服力呢？而且我们要创造个氛围：为历史说实话的人，特别是被倭人扭曲的历史，都是中国人民的朋友。他们的工作会被中国人民欣赏和赞助。换句话说，他们可以通过自己诚实的工作，获得名声、地位和金钱。如果《南京梦魇》这样水平一般的纪录片能得到这么大的影响力，必有更多才华横溢的导演会挑选这个题材。大家听过‘千金买骨’这个成语吗？老祖宗教了我们的计策，为什么不用呢？”

8月19日，针对有网友提出的“难道年年都要我们捐款”的质疑，Jason Liu在第二个帖子里写下了这样的文字：

“大家在捐着款，大家也在发愁，明年的版权费该怎么办呀？

呵呵，请问，在你的生活中有一部广为流传却总也不死的影片吗？

还想请问，一年后，两年后，十年后，我们是不是还只能搬出这部只有两个人制作的纪录片，告诉世人：你去看这个吧，南京大屠杀就是这样的。

如果真是这样，样板戏的年代恍然又到了眼前，那才将是我们真正的无奈吧。

我认为，我们今天这么努力地让它生，就是为了明年让它光荣地死去。

我们今天告诉全世界我们是多么地关注影片背后的历史，就是为了来年让更多才华横溢的导演来表现这段历史。

很多朋友捐了钱，甚至捐了很多钱（一个星期的收入）。我欣赏捐助了的朋友，但不赞成捐了很多的朋友。是让100个人一人捐500块的方法好，还是让5000个人一人捐10块的影响大呢？

这是历史，是应该让大家都知道的历史，不是筹建股份公司。

所以请你告诉你的朋友，有这么部影片在讲述我们的历史，他现在需要你善意的帮助。但请不要捐助太多，更重要的是请你的家人同事，一起看看这部影片，看看人性的善与恶，希望他们能告诉更多的人贡献自己的力量。

我也是这样做的，我遍告我的朋友们，请你帮助这部影片，捐出你认为值得记忆的数字，千万不要太多，让更多的人有机会来参与。”

这两个帖子，被许多网友称赞为在这场争论中“最具有理性和建设性的想法”。按照自己的想法，Joshua Tu捐了30美元，因为，“南京大屠杀的死难者有30万人”。

尽管依旧不时出现质疑，但捐款行动却持续地进行着。到记者截稿时，根据吴海燕提供的数字，已经有超过1000名的网友捐款，数额已经达到31000美元，大部分都是美国的华人及留学生，因为很多地址都来自美国的各个大学。在许多邮寄的支票中，还夹着明信片，上面写着各种祝福和感激的话语。

这场捐款行动无疑也帮助约瑟夫“走出了绝望”。

8月19日晚上，约瑟夫在“”上发表了一封公开致谢信，称自己“被真正地感动了，并且倍感荣耀”。

“看到这么多的中国人站出来挽救这部电影，这实在是让我惊异。”约瑟夫在信中说，“我觉得这股来自中国的巨大反响和力量太了不起了，尤其是数百名经济上并不宽裕的学生挽手向前，力挽狂澜，尤其让我感动。

　　“让我强调一点：这不是一部我约瑟夫个人的电影，这部电影属于所有的中国人，属于全世界，也属于未名网站上的每一个支持者。所以，让我代表需要认知‘南京大屠杀’这段历史的西方世界，说一声：谢谢您！”

吴海燕告诉记者，在9月1日那天，她和约瑟夫会公布最后的数额。这些捐款将用于支付音乐版权的续约、网站维护费用、邮寄DVD等开支。如果有剩余，会用于投资制作日文版。

“也许我还会面临更大的威胁，来自日本的压力。”约瑟夫说，“但我会继续尝试一次，希望能够让日本国民有机会了解真相。”

8月26日，记者在“”上留下了自己的电子邮件，希望网友能就此事发来邮件谈谈自己的看法。在短短一个小时内，有7名网友发来电邮，除了一个网友依旧质疑“这是场骗局”外，其余6人都表示了对约瑟夫的支持。 其中一个网友这样写道：“其实，更多的时候是我们中国人自己在选择，我们的态度，便决定了周遭的一切。如果这件事情无声地结束了，这部电影从Youtube上面撤走了，换做我是日本右翼分子，我就会说这一定是假的了。你看，连中国人自己都不支持。换做将来别的学者想要再拾起这个话题，一定有人说：‘Why bother？Don＇t you see what happened to that Dr．Joseph？''（‘得了吧，难道你没看到约瑟夫博士的遭遇吗？’）”

300位中国人力挽狂澜


要求别人帮忙, 对我来说, 很难. 但是, 表达感激之情是我乐意做的事.

在从8月18号到8月19号的24个小时里, 有300名中国人(主要是未名网站的海外华人和学
生-译者注.) 站出来支持电影 "南京梦魇-南京大屠杀", 他们捐助了超过1万5千美元
(这是实际收到的数字, 相信还有捐款支票没有收到的.-译者注). 这真的是了不起!
我真正地被感动了, 我倍感荣耀.

以这个速度, 我相信到本周末将会有出现: 1000名中国人出来力挽狂澜.
到这个周末, 如果捐款以这样的节奏继续下去, 我确信我们会得到足够的资金来续签版
权合约和其它相关的费用.

被挽救是感觉很极好的一件事! 而所有的这300位朋友是挽救者, 因此, 正如我们期望
的, "南京梦魇"有可能会一直保留在网络上.

当我在公开信里写道: "我放弃了, 我洗手不干了"等等语句时, 所有和这部电影有关的

每天看倒这样的威胁言论对人来说是非常压抑沉重的, 因此我能购想像张纯如当初经历
的一切. 她为此失去了宝贵的生命.

因此, 当我写公开信的时候(8月16号-译者注), 我唯一的想法就是到此为止,划上一个
句号, 停止所有的威胁, 所有的侮辱, 结束一切, 也逃出所有的恶性财务循环和灾难.

然后, 看到这麽多的中国人站出来挽救这部电影, 这实在是让我惊异.

我觉得这股来自中国社区的巨大反响和力量是了不起的, 尤其是数百名经济上并不宽裕
的学生走上前来, 力挽狂澜, 尤其让我感动.

但是, 让我强调一点: 这不是一部我约瑟夫个人的电影, 这部电影属于所有的中国人,
属于全世界, 也属于未名网站上的每一个支持者.

The Chinese 300 to the Rescue!

It is always difficult for me to ask for help. However, it is easy for me to
say: "Thank you."

In the last 24 hours over 300 Chinese have stepped forward to support this
film, and over $15,000.00 has been received. This is amazing! I am truly
humbled. I am honored.

At this rate, I would estimate that by the end of this week it will be: The
Chinese 1000 to the Rescue!
By the end of this week, if donations continue at this pace, we will surely
have raised enough money to pay the licensing renewal fees and all
associated expenses.

It feels wonderful to be rescued! And all of you have rescued this film, so
that, hopefully, it can stay online forever.

When I wrote my letter, informing the world that I had "given up" and was "
washing my hands of this", everything connected with this film seemed
hopeless. Every DVD distributor in the US had turned me down.
In China, Chinese authorities had refused to allow me to show this film in
theaters, on TV, and had even refused to allow me to sell the DVD of this
film.
Although this film has been seen by over 4 million people, and is ranked in
the Top 10 "Most Discussed Films of All Time" at Youtube.com, and can only
be considered an amazing success, financially it was a complete failure and
could never pay for itself. The fact that this is a great film about an
important event in history, made this failure hurt all that much more.

And then there are the hate messages.
Almost every day someone posts or sends me something hateful about this film
. Almost every week I get messages like: "You will die like Iris Chang."

I can only imagine what Iris Chang must have gone through. It is extremely
stressful to be attacked on a daily basis. She sacrificed her life for this
cause and I can understand the misery she must have been going through.

So, when I wrote that letter, I wanted only to bring this to an end and to
stop the threats, the insults, and to escape from all the financial problems
and misery.

Then, to my astonishment, the Chinese people to the rescue.

I am amazed at the tremendous response of the Chinese community, including
the hundreds of impoverished students who stepped forward to save this movie.

However, let me emphasize: This is NOT my movie. It belongs to the Chinese
people and it belongs to the world. This movie belongs to every one of you.

So, on behalf of the world, let me say: Thank you.

PBS email has problem. It is true. But other emails addr. are good. I sent the support letter to all of them except the PBS (delivery failure). I also sent a email to Dr. Joseph about this problem. He replied he noticed that and may give us another working email later.

United people could make impossible things become possible. Let's do it!

I have completed a draft of the Japanese language edition of the Rape
of Nanking, which can be viewed at:

We are checking for errors and other problems which we will fix. Your
feedback is welcome. I admit, I feel I am putting my life in danger by
creating this film.

As promised, I have obtained the email addresses for PBS
representatives, including PBS president Ms. Kerger, and the New York
Times and the Los Angeles Times. I urge everyone, and their friends,
to send an email to Kerger, and to cc their letter to these other
addresses. This way, the New York Times and the LA Times will be
informed. We can have a great impact if thousands of people send an
email.

I have also written a sample letter (below). You may send that letter,
or you may send parts of that letter, or your may write your own
letter.

I will not profit from this: I am offering the film to PBS for free.

Please Show the Film: The Rape of Nanking, this December.

We urge PBS and WGBH to show the highly acclaimed documentary film,
"The Rape of Nanking" this December, which is the 70th anniversary of
this tragedy. By showing this film, PBS will provide some balance to
what has been a biased, distorted view of history.

In the recent PBS series on WWII, Japanese were presented as victims
and Japanese soldiers were applauded for their bravery. However, the
major contributions and suffering of the Chinese people were
completely ignored. China was a major allie of the US. Over 30 million
Chinese were killed by the Japanese. Over 1 million Japanese soldiers
were fighting in China, and if the Chinese people had given up, these
one million Japanese soldiers would have been unleashed against the US
and America might have lost the war. In America, Chinese also suffered
because they were Asian. And yet PBS failed to make any mention of the
Chinese or Chinese-Americans, focusing instead on Japanese suffering
and bravery.

On the PBS home page, PBS pays honor to the 6 million Jews who died in
Europe. PBS is also planning to air yet another program glorifying the
bravery of Japanese soldiers. Why are the deaths of over 30 million
Chinese, and the suffering and
contributions of the Chinese people and Chinese-Americans ignored by
PBS? This type of programming is biased, racist, and presents a
distorted view of history.

The 70th anniversary of the Rape of Nanking is this December. We are
requesting that PBS and PBS stations air the highly acclaimed
documentary film, "The Rape of Nanking" which was produced by noted
scholar, Rhawn Joseph, Ph.D., and award winning journalist, Haiyan Wu.
This film has had a world wide impact, and has been viewed an
estimated 10 million times, 4 million times in the US. It is ranked #9
"Most Discussed Film of All Time" at Youtube. We believe this is one
of the best films ever made on this subject. The producers have agreed
to offer this film, free of charge to PBS stations. They would also
work with PBS to make any requested changes.

We urge you to show this film, "The Rape of Nanking" this December.

I wish to again thank everyone for their support for the documentary
film: The Rape of Nanking." I sent a DVD to everyone who donated. If
you did not receive the DVD, let me
know and I will immediately send you one.

I would also like to provide an update on our fundraising, and a
report on our progress to produce the Japanese language edition.

1) Everyone will be pleased to know that we raised, so far, over
$50,000.00. This is enough money to save the film and pay all fees and
most of the expenses related to this film, including licensing renewal
fees.

2) Because of the donations, I was able to hire a professional
Japanese actor to narrate the film in Japanese, and a Japanese editor
and translator to help translate and edit the
narration and subtitles. In addition to paying for the recording
studio and a recording engineer, this was all very expensive and it
costs a lot of money. This would not have
been possible without the help of donors. The two Japanese who have
been working on this, have found the fillm to be quite shocking.

3) Everyone will be pleased to know that I have corrected the few
errors and we have nearly completed the Japanese language edition.We
will have a draft completed by this Sunday! The next step is showing
the draft to Japanese for feedback, and to correct any problems. Then
I we will create a final version, which we will put on video.google,
Youtube, and other internet websites. We will also contact the
Japanese press. This may take another two weeks.

4) The 70th anniversary is this December. A number of people have
asked for permission to allow the film to be shown at their
university. This is a great idea. If you would like to organize a
free showing, let me know and contact your school or organization.

5) I have offered this film to PBS (KQED) TV for free. They refused it
because they claimed the subject was too "controversial" and they
didn't want to offend the Asian community, i.e. the Japanese. I
believe that if we all contact PBS, or ABC TV or CBS TV or NBC TV, we
might be able to get this film on American TV in time for the 70th
anniversary.

6) In about 10 days I will supply everyone with email or telephone
contact information for the top executives at these TV broadcast
stations. If a single TV executive gets hundreds (or thousands) of
calls and Emails about this film, we might be able to persuade them to
put this movie on TV so that all of American can learn of this
tragedy.
