Having a Baby

Congratulations! You are about to begin a wonderful life journey. This list will help you prepare for your child’s birth and future.
1. Apply for Employment Insurance Maternity and Parental Benefits

Employment Insurance (EI) provides maternity and parental benefits to individuals who

  • are pregnant;
  • have recently given birth;
  • are adopting a child; or
  • are caring for a newborn.
You can apply for EI benefits online or in person at a Service Canada Centre. You should apply as soon as you stop working, even if you receive or will receive money when you become unemployed.
2. Apply for your Child’s Birth Certificate

The birth certificate is issued by the province or territory in which your child was born. You should apply as soon as possible after your child is born.
Residents of Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario can use the Newborn Registration Service to complete their child's Birth Registration and apply for their child's Birth Certificate and Social Insurance Number.
3. Register your Child for a Health Card

When you receive your child's birth certificate you will, in some cases, need to register your child for your provincial or territorial health plan.
4. Apply for your Child's Social Insurance Number (SIN)

Apply for a Social Insurance Number (SIN) card for your child so that he or she will be eligible for government benefits, such as the Canada Learning Bond.
Residents of Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario can use the Newborn Registration Service to complete their child's Birth Registration and apply for their child's Birth Certificate and Social Insurance Number.
Otherwise, to apply for a Social Insurance Number, you must complete an application form. You can obtain an application from your local office or download one. We encourage you to apply in person. This process is faster and more convenient, as it does not require you to part with your valuable identity documents. However, you may also apply by mail.
You must provide a primary document that proves your identity and status in Canada. If the name on your primary document is different from the one you are currently using, you must also provide a supporting document. These documents must be originals and written in English or French.
As a parent or legal guardian signing an application for a Social Insurance Number on behalf of a minor, you must also provide your own proof-of-identity document.
For more information, contact a Service Delivery Agent:

For service in French: 1 800 808-6352
5. Apply for the Canada Child Tax Benefit

The Canada Child Tax Benefit (CCTB) is a tax-free monthly payment made to eligible families to help them with the cost of raising children under age 18.
You should apply for the CCTB as soon as possible after your child is born. CCTB application information is available from the Canada Revenue Agency Web site.
