A new Pew Research Center survey found that 44% of Americans ages 18 to 49 who aren't parents say they are not very or not at all likely to have children someday, up 7 percentage points from 37% in 2018.
The findings do not bode well for reversing the declining fertility rate in the United States, the report added. The U.S. fertility rate has been hit hard by the public health and economic crisis caused by the pandemic. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of babies born in the United States fell 4 percent to about 3.6 million in 2020.
About a quarter of adults under 40 who are parents do not want more children because of the financial costs involved, while three in 10 say they do not want more children because they are too old, the report said.
