“What I Have Lived For
Bertrand Russell
Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind. These passions, like great winds, have blown me hither and thither, in a wayward course, over a deep ocean of anguish, reaching to the verge of despair.
I have sought love, first, because it brings ecstasy – ecstasy so great that I would have sacrificed all the rest of life for a few hours of this joy. I have sought it, next, because it relieves loneliness – that terrible loneliness in which one shivering consciousness looks over the rim of the world into cold unfathomable lifeless abyss. … “
在第一段的第二句里, 作者已经讲到了 ”have blown me hither and thither”, “like great winds”, 就已经包含了 difficult to control by myself 的意思, 为什么他还要讲 ”in a wayward course” 这几个字? 他是否不够简练? 还是他在强调这个 course? 表示他已经在 the deep ocean of anguish 里面体验了很长的 journey 了? 但是, when great winds blow him over a deep ocean, 他当然经历了一个 journey.
在第二段的第一句里, 作者已经讲到了 “ecstasy”, 为什么他还要讲 ”for a few hours of this joy” , 而不是说 ”for a few hours of it (i.e. the ecstasy)”? 他是否不够简练? |
