</TD><TD vAlign=center align=middle height=217></TD></TR><TR><TD colSpan=2>Brecken Chinn Swartz (M.Ed., Harvard Graduate School of Education; B.A., International Political Economy, The Colorado College) makes use of a variety of research methods to explore processes of intercultural communication and broadcast production, with a particular focus on educational programming. Brecken has lived and worked in Beijing, China, and Tokyo, Japan, and focuses much of her work on cross-Pacific research and dialogue. She has taught courses in Intercultural Communication, Gender, and Communication Theory, and is currently working as a television producer for the Mandarin Chinese service of the Voice of America. She is conversant in Chinese and Japanese, and is also learning Korean and Spanish.
Brecken is currently working on a dissertation focusing on cultural differences in the journalistic strategies of Chinese- and English-speaking journalists at the Voice of America and the BBC World Service. She has presented conference papers on a variety of cross-cultural media topics for the International Communication Association, the National Communication
Association, the Association of Educators in Journalism and Mass Communication, and others. She also researched and co-authored the report, "erspectives toward the United States in selected newspapers of the People's Republic of China" for the US-China Security Review Commission, an advisory arm of the US Senate, together with her advisor, Dr. Deborah Cai.
