My 3-years-old A70 got same problem recently. Canon canada repairs my camera for free.
Here's the response from canon regarding to my inquiry:
Thank you for your inquiry regarding your PowerShot A70 digital camera.
It has recently come to our attention that the vendor-supplied CCD image sensor used in this Canon digital PowerShot A70 digital camera may cause the following malfunction: When the product is used in recording or playback mode, the LCD screen and/or electronic viewfinder may exhibit either a distorted image or no image at all. While reports of this malfunction have been rare in Canada, we have determined that it may occur if the product is exposed to hot and humid environments.
Effective immediately, and regardless of warranty status, Canon will repair, free of charge, products exhibiting the above-mentioned malfunction if the malfunction is caused by the CCD image sensor.
Please forward your camera to your nearest service facility listed below. This information is for residents of Canada only. If you do not reside in Canada, please contact the Canon Customer Support Centre in your region. We spare no effort in our quality control process to make sure our customers can use our products with confidence. Please forward just the camera body, no memory cards, batteries, and no accessories or manuals. Package the camera so that it does not suffer any damage during shipping. Include your name, address, telephone number and a brief description of the problem. If we do find that the CCD is the problem we will cover the shipping back to you.
