It is right that PHD means "permanent head damage". You will be suffered on research, worry about your future career and fundings.
Mostly professor will provide you scholarship, but this is guaranteed. Scholarship varies from 0 to 35,000 yearly, typically 15,000 to 21,000. However,
As an immigrant, you are eligible to apply for many other fundings and awards to support your study. NSERC is the highest reputation scholarship in Canada, which will benefit your academic reputation. Keep looking, you will have many opportunities. But as I know, most PHD students just simply depend on their supervisor's support, and rarely explore other opportunities. Theoritially, you are able to receive several scholarships at the same time. Suppose, you have three 20,000 scholarships, you would be a very rich PHD student. Hahaha.... However, Very often, once you have got another scholarship, your supervisor will stop his offer.
In addition, the research and professor job market, which asks for PHD title, is very small, and many PHDs fail to find a proper job. Others just wander in Universities as Postdocs for many years, and hardly find a door to the real job market. Because most professors only conduct you on research, but do not guide you how to establish yourself. Due to the cultural and educational problems, most chinese students are lack of those skills.
If you are able to graduate before 35 years old, and your English is very proficient, especially your writing, you could consider to pursue a PHD. Otherwise, you should be very carefull with this desicion. |
