pipo, canada is a country of immigrants. there are african canadians, indian canadians, italian canadians, chinese canadians, arabian canadians, russian canadians, american canadians, french canadians,.....
This is my take on this matter:
Chinese Canadian (without the hyphen) = Chinese and Canadian exist as two entities; it means that “Canadian” is the prominent identity (more likely when you mention nationality or citizenship) and that “Chinese” is the adjective that describes this particular Canadian.
I know that many Chinese resist the idea that they are somehow not fully “Canadian” when they are labeled “Chinese Canadian”
Chinese-Canadian (with the hyphen) = The hyphen joins Chinese with Canadian and makes one hybrid identity. A Chinese-Canadian is as equally Chinese as he/she is Canadian and the two identities exist together.
This should be used when we are refered as a community or an individual to be different than others.
I just wanted to provide some food for thought. Is Chinese Canadian the same as Chinese-Canadian? And if not, when is it necessary to add a hyphen or to omit it?
Looking forward to hearing from you,
have fun! |
