Bank ATM's Converted to Steal IDs of Bank Customers

A team of organized criminals are installing equipment on legitimate bank ATM's in at least 2 regions to steal both the ATM card number and the PIN. The team sits nearby in a car receiving the information transmitted wirelessly over weekends and evenings from equipment they install on the front of the ATM . If you see an attachment like this, do not use the ATM and report it immediately to the bank using the phone on the front of the ATM.

The equipment used to capture your ATM card number and PIN are cleverly disguised to look like normal ATM equipment. A "skimmer" is mounted to the front of the normal ATM card slot that reads the ATM card number and transmits it to the criminals sitting in a nearby car.

At the same time, a wireless camera is disguised to look like a leaflet holder and is mounted in a position to view ATM PIN entries.

The thieves copy the cards and use the PIN numbers to withdraw thousands from many accounts in a very short time directly from the bank ATM.

安省省警反詐騙組處理參事警長戈里(Jim Gorry)承認，盜用銀行卡的情況近年的確轉趨嚴重。因為不法之徒可將盜用得來的資料製成假卡，然後直接到銀行自動櫃員機，從卡主的戶口提取現款。

相比盜用信用卡，匪徒只能購買物品，再將物品出售至黑市市場來套取現金，所得現款可能已大打折扣。

偷竊銀行卡資料的其中一個方法，是偷偷在零售店的銷售點終端設備(Terminal)安裝刷卡器(Skimmer)。

部分情況下，店中可能有內鬼與賊人接應，但亦可能在沒人協助下，賊人單方行事，而零售店亦毫不知情。\n
而賊人更專挑一些大型零售店下手，因為這些商店往往有超過一個收銀機，加上人流多，在繁忙時間做手腳亦不易被察覺。

「不法分子會不斷轉移偷竊銀行卡資料的『基地』，他們讓刷卡器停留在一間商店數小時至十數日不定，視乎情況而定。當然，他們花了工夫安裝偷竊器，固然想偷取愈多資料愈好。」戈里說。

賊人要利用別人的銀行卡詐騙，必須同時取得銀行卡磁帶上的資料及個人密碼(PIN)，過往卡主在輸入私人密碼時，會作遮掩，免被人偷窺。但戈里稱，如今科技先進，當卡主在按入鈕鍵時，密碼資料已被盜取。賊人用資料製造假卡後，深夜到銀行自動櫃員機提款。
