The key in the case is whether the repair only restored your roof to its orginal condition or the repair improved the roof beyond its orginal condition. Detail see the second criteria in the above link. Generally, as accountants, we don't suggest our clients to expense large amount of repair expense. It is always possible that later CRA or Revenue Québec will disallow the expense and reassess your income, which may cause penalty and interests to you (I am not sure if there is a penalty or not, I guess no). However, if you are really short of cash in current year and want to expense the $11,000 to save around $2,000 tax, just do it. As later you can argue with CRA and Revenue Québec that the repair only restoor your roof to its orginal condition, and it would be hard for CRA and Revenue Québec to prove that you are wrong. I hope that your accountant would not blame me to make trouble to him or her.
