Talk about a phony war. Thousands of Chinese protesters trash Japanese
4 |% I5 Y) {0 iconsulates in a nation that has not lately shown itself to be incompetent   E# Q( E% r1 O
in the area of crowd control. The cause? A history textbook accepted for
1 Y" e! V  U  ^% e2 B" }use by only 18 of the 11,102 junior high schools in Japan.% n/ \, y- p) k" D' t' W8 F

There are real feelings and issues involved in this dispute, even if the * e  Q+ J, C' p
Chinese manifestations are less than entirely spontaneous.

6 W+ A9 A/ X0 q2 w% F5 BThe Chinese people truly have not forgotten the Japanese occupations of
, ?, m- ^0 G9 e0 i/ Kthe 1930s and 1940s - incursions accompanied by high casualty totals and . |# Z7 E  }0 Y; N2 M
widespread brutality.

The textbook at issue whitewashes these episodes and revives the old $ ~( x5 h7 x! M. z) ]  G
explanation of Japan's aggressive behaviour as a response to Western ' P, I9 I9 Q/ U3 P2 l
colonialism and a consequence of the country's lack of natural resources.
. ]$ T! t  ^4 i4 Q- a" m; R2 ~( F% pIt is viewed with embarrassment by most Japanese, and has been repudiated ; J& y# Y/ O, a3 W5 J! p; g2 D
by the leading teachers' union.

Until then, the productive way to express opposition to Japan's joining , F) R# ]( @1 E, z" R2 G
the Security Council is through logic and diplomacy. If there are good ! P5 s, ^8 H3 \* g+ w
reasons, let them stand the test of debate. Protests such as these are not # |, i0 }- H0 y' R$ A
reasonable.
