About 1.3 million people in Montreal are being told they must boil their water before drinking it.

City officials have issued a boil water advisory covering all areas south of the Metropolitan Expressway (Highway 40), from LaSalle to Pointe-aux-Trembles and including the boroughs of Anjou, and Villeray-Saint-Michel-Parc-Extension.

" |; H' [6 u7 Z# N& i" X! `; _0 sThe towns of Charlemagne, Mont-Royal, Hampstead, Westmount, Côte-Saint-Luc and Montreal East are also affected.

% a+ q9 I6 N1 a' NThe head of Montreal's water service, Chantal Morissette, said the advisory is a precautionary measure.

She said the decision comes after test results at the Atwater filtration plant showed water was not up to standard.

2 h* g9 K# N# q# r, vAccording to authorities, workers had lowered the water in the Atwater reservoir for ongoing renovations. When the level was raised again, officials discovered sediment in the water.

There have been reports of discoloured, brownish water coming from the taps in several boroughs across the city.

& F1 u* R' ~0 U1 i4 G" }Officials will be testing the water to make sure there is no dangerous bacteria in the sediment.

At a press conference held shortly before noon on Wednesday, authorities said the advisory will be in effect for 24 hours. Following that, the water will be tested again and the public will be updated on the situation.

  N! d' R7 j5 N9 m" W' ~"We're asking citizens to boil their water … for everything that concerns drinking water, for preparing baby bottles, for brushing teeth, for washing vegetables, and for making ice cubes," said Morissette.

% d/ z! u0 |) M- k) O: S% I4 |7 RTap water that has not been boiled is safe to use for washing clothing, bathing and for washing dishes as long as they are well dried afterwards.
