; b2 k" {) i1 y; P$ uuse by only 18 of the 11,102 junior high schools in Japan.

There are real feelings and issues involved in this dispute, even if the ( u; ?! W& I1 E8 H& Q  N1 E
Chinese manifestations are less than entirely spontaneous.: ~; N/ p; \3 k( j: t
0 B0 a. T) U1 w
The Chinese people truly have not forgotten the Japanese occupations of ' t- {3 m4 Z# }: ~$ W3 B
the 1930s and 1940s - incursions accompanied by high casualty totals and   p# E* B5 r! h5 A7 }% Y, t# U
widespread brutality.& M9 R# i% P3 L+ c4 P( K" i

$ J, a( E6 R( R8 a, _. E3 \The textbook at issue whitewashes these episodes and revives the old $ q/ _5 D% ?6 b! \6 |* S7 p+ x
explanation of Japan's aggressive behaviour as a response to Western
5 c9 N7 f2 Q6 B$ b9 ~3 Pcolonialism and a consequence of the country's lack of natural resources.
/ M0 z% M3 n% m5 nIt is viewed with embarrassment by most Japanese, and has been repudiated , |7 y2 X: D" n6 u( f3 J8 [. g
by the leading teachers' union.

3 R; X6 s; A1 m2 o, ^8 gThe real reason violence has been tolerated by the Chinese authorities is
0 H" ?5 o' w  \* MJapan's campaign to acquire a permanent seat on the United Nations
* Z/ h3 P5 Y1 S0 hSecurity Council, a change China fiercely opposes. Its stated reasons have . T+ \5 e# ?* _; A5 C0 @
to do with Japan's reluctance to own up to its warlike past.% ~5 _5 w- Y4 j: [' L; t

to criticize its neighbour. When we hear Communist Party officials

Until then, the productive way to express opposition to Japan's joining
