The Chinese people truly have not forgotten the Japanese occupations of + L8 N$ V! p2 M% b0 R l
the 1930s and 1940s - incursions accompanied by high casualty totals and

7 j( F2 [! o. j6 K1 AThe textbook at issue whitewashes these episodes and revives the old 0 i1 A- T+ ?- o# R4 z4 m1 T5 o) }( l
explanation of Japan's aggressive behaviour as a response to Western
9 _8 E5 m6 u2 Vcolonialism and a consequence of the country's lack of natural resources. 3 q7 y ~, {7 R: p( M" m
It is viewed with embarrassment by most Japanese, and has been repudiated 5 {. f4 J8 k$ S3 g: b* U0 h9 B: q
by the leading teachers' union.

The real reason violence has been tolerated by the Chinese authorities is 1 P8 j4 N6 T6 ^) m' h$ b
Japan's campaign to acquire a permanent seat on the United Nations 6 q- x$ |- v) N$ \5 ^' t1 @0 f L5 K
Security Council, a change China fiercely opposes. Its stated reasons have

China, among the most repressive societies in the world, is in no position

repudiate the forced collectivizations of the 1970s and admit their ; x2 v* K- O, ^' P( D& R' r
responsibility for the Tiananmen Square Massacre of 1989, we shall start

% _7 c! d( R eUntil then, the productive way to express opposition to Japan's joining # Q% t- \. T" U" i6 }
the Security Council is through logic and diplomacy. If there are good
