Road Vehicles with Restricted-Area Use (C Licence Plate)

Vehicles registered under a C licence plate are road vehicles “with restricted-area use”, that is, they are not authorized to operate everywhere on the Québec road network.
These vehicles are classified into five categories:
Vehicle used in outlying regions
Passenger vehicles or vehicles used to transport children to school, operating in only one location, that is not connected to the Québec highway system;
A commercial vehicle or truck that does not require a permit from the Commission des transports du Québec, a motor home, tool vehicle or tow truck, operating in only one location, that is not connected to the Québec highway system.
Farm tractor
A tractor fitted with tires designed to pull farm equipment and used for other purposes if owned by a farmer, or for personal purposes only, if it is owned by an individual other than a farmer.
Snowmobile with a net weight of over 450 kg
A self-propelled winter vehicle, built to drive over snow or ice and equipped with at least one steering ski or runner.
Motorcycle
Motorcycle whose model date is 1980 or earlier, which has been preserved or restored to its original condition. It may only be operated on roads where the speed limit is 70 km/h or less. This definition of a motorcycle as a vehicle with restricted-area use has been in effect since February 1, 2012. Before that date, motorcycles in this category were those whose date of manufacture was older than 25 years.
Other vehicles
These vehicles are allowed to operate only in areas where the speed limit does not exceed 70 km/h as long as they do not operate either on a highway or a limited access road*:
Hand-crafted vehicle, other than a motorcycle;
A vehicle, other than a motorcycle, that was manufactured over 25 years ago;
Vehicle with a net weight of 450 kg or less, other than a motorcycle, moped, scooter or tool vehicle;
*Limited access road: a public highway that may be entered or left only at the specially provided entrances or exits. |
