It seems at least one (maybe two or three?!) of the engine mounts or transmission support was broken! The centre of the parts are made of rubber. It play the roles of supporting and decrementing shaking. The noise you heared on highway tell me that is the problem.
If it is true, it could be the reason why you engine starts then stops immediately. The engine or transmission is not on proper position (broken mounts), so your car need more power to run even on idle state. That is what I guess.
How much you got this car? In my opinion, if repair costs more $300, you should not have it repaired. Some people buy an old one at around $1000 and spend more than the price on repair. Dont put too much money and effort on repair of one old car. good luck
