Winter Driving Tips
The yearly unforgettable winter will soon be around the corner. That means snow will be heading its way to Montreal. For the new (winter) drivers, here are some tips:
1) change your engine oil to the winter type (check your owner's manual), that will improve the fuel economy and engine performance.
2) learn how to "pump" the brake during emergency if your car doesn't have ABS braks. DO NOT LOCK your wheels (means - do not pressed your brakes firmly down) otherwise your car will slip, slide and turn around.
3) check your tires treads - if it is 4 season tires and not much treads are left, you should replace them with new ones. If you are not going skiing or to the country every weekend, then it is not necessary to buy snow tires. This is especially true for manual shift cars, that usually hold the road better an automatic cars.
4) check the strength of your engine coolant if you have not changed it for more than 2 winters. It will help to protect your engine during the winter.
5) when change lanes on icy/snowy roads and highways, make sure that your speed is not fast and the "angle" of the cutting the lane is as small as possible. Avoid big "cut" or your car will flip over.
6) do not use "recyled" air. Set the button to Fresh Air so that your windsheld will not be foggy. Use the hot air to blow the windshield is a good way to clear the windshield as long as you are using fresh air.
7) If you are driving an old car and you don't have CAA membership, then it is better to buy a booster cable for your trunk.
8)always keep your distance from the car in front of you. |
