MDS Inc. said Friday it is closing down its Montreal bio-analytical operations amid concerns from a U.S. regulatory body. The Toronto-based drug developer and laboratory services company said it will voluntarily shut down the facility after a U.S. Food and Drug Administration audit of studies that compared generic and brand-name drugs at the Montreal site between 2000 and 2004.
The FDA audit raised "a number of issues pertaining to the effectiveness and management of the five-year review," MDS said.
The company said it will bring in project management from outside its MDS Pharma Services division to deal with the FDA's concerns about the review.
MDS said commercial activities will continue in MDS Pharma Service's other bio-analytical sites in Quebec, the United States, Switzerland and England.
The company did not indicate what impact the closure might have on its work force.
"I am disappointed that we have not made progress at the rate necessary on this review," MDS president and CEO Stephen DeFalco said in a statement.
"We are enhancing the leadership and project management of this effort in order to complete this review to the FDA's satisfaction. Finalizing this effort in a high quality way is the top priority for the company."
An analyst who follows MDS said the shutdown likely won't have a bid effect on the company's stock, but noted that the problems with the FDA are not good for its reputation.
Shares of MDS were off 30 cents at $21.02 on the TSX.
