Does somebody know is this normal? Is it sexual assault?

I recently went to a dentist to clean my teeth. Because it was first-time visit, he said he need to check my teeth and he used a piece of gauze on my tongue and pull my tongue by hand to the left and to the right to check. Do all the dentist do this kind of checking here in Montreal? I wonder if it is sexual assault?
Can someone help me? Thank you very much!

yes, he wore gloves and with gauze.
I never heard such thing in China.
