It doesn't matter how much your landlord increased the rent last year. You can find the regulation and a calculation form for rent increase for this year on the website of "Regie du Logement du Quebec" www.rdl.gouv.ca The increase is calculated based on many reasons, such as normal increase about 1.4%, plus repairs that your landlord did for your appartment as well as for the building in the year 2002 and etc. Try to estimate how much it comes out by using the calcultion form. If you don't agree with the rent increase, you can write back and tell him you want to renew the lease but disagree with the increase. You may also try to negotiate a reasonable increase. Anyway you have to reply to his letter or notice within 30 days by sending him a registered letter. If you give him the letter in person, don't forget to ask for a receipt. If finally you still can't come to an agreement, you can go to Regie du Logement du Quebec and have them calculate the increase for you. |
