Hi folks ---

This month in different clubs in Montreal, STAC will be held and silver points will be awarded. See below for more details.


This May in Kingston, Regional CBF like that in Montreal this Feb will be held, and gold points will be awarded.


Kindly avail ourselves during the week ends, and take part in these matches if interested.

By the way, if I know correctly, at least 300 master points are needed to become a world life master, of which at least 50 black points from club events, other color of points from different unit/regional, or higher levels, like gold, silver and red.


Looking to be a life master ? Some are appproaching to the stratification step by step, by earning very good gold points this Feb.

大家都很关心叶女士的状况, 昨天晚间我有机会同她女儿通了电话, 并同叶女士本人电话聊了一两分钟. 手术非常成功. 如我理解没错, 应该是良性的. 病变部分的节肠也已被成功切除. 但目前还不可以吃任何食物, 听上去声音好象还很虚弱. 如果一切正常, 五天到一星期应当可以出院. 蒙特里尔远离中国故乡, 最近的亲友多不在身边. 尤其象叶女士这样独力拉扯女儿成长, 相当不容易. 我们大家相互关爱, 是最值得鼓励和提倡的事情. 不一定在物质方面, 心意到了就好, 看看我们可以为她和她女儿能做点什么. 也让我们一起衷心祝福叶女士早日康复, 早一天回到桥牌桌边.

Passed or unpassed hand - Bergen raises & reversed





Used by responder when opener bids 1H or 1S



A. Basic Responder Bids by Unpassed Hand

Note: Traditional splinter bids are used in conjunction this basic treatment



Raise to 2* = 3-card support (7-10 points)



..........constructive (on in competition)



Raise to 3* = 4-card support (0-6 points)

Raise to 4* = 5-card support (0-6 points)

3C* = 4-card+ support (7-10 points)

B. Advanced Responder Bids by Unpassed Hand

Note: The traditional splinter bids are not used with this advanced treatment



Bidding 3 of the other major is an “ambiguous splinter” and shows 4+ trumps and is game forcing. If opener is interested in identifying the splinter he uses a “splinter relay” by bidding the cheapest available bid and responder replies by steps:



3S* over 3H asks responder to bid the splinter suit (3NT* = clubs, 4C* = diamonds, 4D* = hearts



3NT* over 3S ask responder to bid the splinter suit (4C* = clubs, 4D* = diamonds, 4H* = spades





4C* = same requirements as above 3NT bid but shows 16+ HCP instead of 12-15.



4D* = constructive (7-10 support points), same as above 3C (or 3D “Reverse Bergen”) but shows 5+ trumps instead of 4 trumps



Bidding 4 of the other major* is natural and preemptive, usually a 7- or 8-card suit



C. Advanced Responder Bids by Passed Hand

Note: Only used with a passed hand having a limit raise with 4+ trumps and a splinter .



If no splinter use "Reverse Drury"



Bidding 2S* over 1H shows a limit raise with 4+ hearts and a splinter somewhere (not a weak jump shift)



If opener wants to identify the splinter he bids 2NT* (cheapest bid) as a relay



Responder replies by steps: 3C* = club; 3D* = diamond; 3H* = spade





Bidding 2NT* over 1S shows a limit raise with 4+ spades and a splinter somewhere



If opener wants to identify the splinter he bids 3C* (cheapest bid) as a relay



Responder replies by steps: 3D* = club; 3H* = diamond; 3S* = heart





D. When RHO Interferes



Raises of 2 (constructive), 3* and 4* (preemptive) are On; other bids are Off.



If RHO doubles: Responder bids 2NT* (Jordan 2NT, not Jacoby 2NT) to show a limit raise or better (10+ points and at least 4-card support).



If RHO overcalls: Responder makes a cuebid of overcaller’s suit to show a limit raise or better (10+ points and at least 3-card support).

2 Club Opening (Strong)







Requirements For Opening 2C



You have more quick tricks than losers.



You are within one trick of game in your own hand.



You would be sick to your stomach if partner passed your one-bid.



With 22+ HCP always open 2C. (Some play 21+ or even 20+ HCP)



With a 1-suiter and 9+ tricks, open 2C.



With a 2-suiter or 1 ½- suiter and 8+ tricks



Not Preferred: Some open 2C



Preferred: Others will not open 2C (unless 22 HCP) but, rather, bid the first suit then jump shift in the second suit in order to show both suits.





If 23-24 HCP and balanced, open 2C then rebid 2NT



If 25-27 HCP and balanced, open 2C then rebid 3NT



Most players open 3NT as the "Gambling 3NT".





If 28-30 HCP and balanced, open 2C then rebid 4NT.

  

Simplified Responses - 2D Waiting

Preferred



2D* = 4+ HCP (usually one control of an A or K)



2H* = less than 4 HCP (a "double negative")



Other bids are positive and show a great suit (with a big balanced hand use 2D Waiting)



Long and strong:



2S = spades



2NT* = hearts



3C = clubs



3D = diamonds





When RHO overcalls



Double* = no values (less that 4 HCP, same as "double negative")



Pass* = some values (4+ HCP with at least an A or K, same as 2D waiting)



Bidding a suit = long and strong





Regular Responses - 2D Waiting

Not Preferred



2D* is waiting. May have anywhere from nothing up to a great hand.



Responder’s rebids of a “second negative” or “cheapest minor rebid” show 0 - 4 HCP:



3C* over opener’s 2H/2S



3D* over opener’s 3C



3NT* over opener’s 3D





Any non-jump rebid by the responder that isn’t a “second negative” shows 4+ - 8 HCP.



A positive response shows 1 ½ quick tricks or 8+ HCP. Usually having a hand with values for a positive response, it is better to first bid 2D, then show positive response. This allows opener to show his suit at the two-level.



After a 2D response, a jump rebid by responder shows a positive response.



It is best to not bid 2D and instead make a positive response on the first bid if: (1) a very good suit like KQJxxx or better, or (2) a 2-suiter. Otherwise bid 2D first.



If responder’s first bid is not 2D, responder is showing a positive response.

  

Control Responses

Not Preferred

  In response to opener’s strong 2C bid responder bids controls using step responses.

Controls: Ace = 2; King = 1

Responses to 2C:



2D*     = 0 or 1 (less than 6 points)



2H*     = 0 or 1 (6+ points)



2S*     = 2



2NT*     = 3 (three Kings)



3C*     = 3 (one Ace and one King)



3D*     = 4



3H*     = 5

If LHO Overcalls at Two Level:



Doubling the opponent’s overcall is for penalty. Passing the overcall is a negative response (0 or 1 control with less than 6 points).



Passing, then, is the first of a series of step responses to show controls.



The cheapest bid* which includes 2NT would then show 0 or 1 control (6+ points)



The next cheapest bid* would then show 2 controls, etc.

If LHO Overcalls at Three Level or Higher:



Showing controls are off:



Double* = no values (less that 4 HCP)



Pass* = some values (4+ HCP with at least an A or K)

Showing 2nd Negative



Responder’s rebids of a “second negative” or “cheapest minor rebid” show 0 - 4 HCP:



3C* over opener’s 2H/2S

Puppet Stayman







The purpose of Puppet Stayman is to explore for an 8-card major suit fit.

A Direct 3C Response to a NT Bid is Puppet Stayman:



Responder bids 3C over opener's 1NT is Puppet Stayman (2C would be regular Stayman).



Responder bids 3C* over opener's 2NT is Puppet Stayman (there is no regular Stayman here).



When opener bids 2C, responder bids 2D and opener rebids 2NT, responder's 3C* is Puppet Stayman (there is no regular Stayman here).

  

Requirements:



Must have enough points for a at least a game-going contract in no trump or a major suit.



Must have ruffing potential with at least a doubleton somewhere.



Shape:



At least one 3-card major - example: 3/2/4/4



Or, two 3-card majors - example: 3/3/2/4



Or, a 3-card major and a 4-card major - example: 3/4/4/2



Or, a 4-card major - example: 4/2/5/2



Or, two 4-card majors - example: 4/4/3/2



Not 5/4 in the majors - start with regular Stayman and use Smolen if necessary









A. Advanced Puppet Stayman (My Preference)

Opener's Rebids to Responder's 3C Bid:



3NT*       = No 5-card or 4-card major



3H*[3S*] = 5-card heart[spade] suit



3D*         = 4 cards in one or both majors

1. General Approach

Five Card Majors



In 1st or 2nd seat a 5-card major suit is promised. Bergen raises are applied.



In 3rd or 4th seat a 4-card major may sometimes be bid. Drury is applied.



Minor Suit Fits



Inverted Minor raises are applied.



Forcing 1NT Over Major Suit Opening



1NT is forcing for one round if responder is an unpassed hand and RHO passes.



1NT is “semi-forcing” if responder is a passed hand and opponents have not bid.



2/1 Game Force



A 2/1 response by an unpassed hand is almost always forcing to game.



If bidding has progressed to a 4-level minor-suit auction and no good fit has been found, the bidding may end there.



Reverses are off.



“Fast Arrival/Slow Arrival” bidding is applied to suit auctions.





A 2/1 response over RHO overcall (but not a take-out double) is invitational and is a “Free Bid” showing 5+ cards and 10+ HCP in the suit bid. This applies to both unpassed and passed hands.



2. Two-Over-One Systemic Bidding Summary

The following is a summary of bidding sequences peculiar to the Two-Over-One system. Bids that are common to Standard American are not summarized except for a few cases. The bidding sequences are for constructive bids in uncontested auctions.



The Two-Over-One system attempts to discover, in order of preference:

1.    A game with an eight card fit in a major.

2.    A game in 3NT.

3.    A game in a minor suit.

Additionally the systemic bids, especially when a minor suit is opened, reveal the hand-shape giving important information to the partnership.



Notes:



A single asterisk ( * ) denotes a non-forcing bid. A double asterisk ( ** ) denotes a forcing bid.



Definitions:



Balanced hand has 4/3/3/3, 4/4/3/2 or 5/3/3/2  shape.



Unbalanced hand contains a void, singleton or two doubletons - examples: 6/5/2/0, 5/4/3/1, 6/3/2/2, etc.



Minimum opener is 12- to 15- playing points.



Opener with extra values is 15+ to 19- playing points.



Opener with reverse values is 16+ to 19- playing points.



Opener with jump shift values is 19+ to 21 playing points.



Responder with “opening hand” values is 12+ playing points (allowing a 2/1 response if available).



Responder’s requirements for a “forcing 1NT” is 6 to 12- HCP.



A splinter bid by opener is a “single jump reverse” or “double jump shift” whichever is the cheapest bid.

With 4/5 shape (4-card major and 5 diamonds) and a hand with opening values, responder always bids the 5-card diamond suit first then rebids the 4-card major.



With 4/5 shape (4-card major and 5 diamonds) and a hand without opening values, responder will bypass the 5-card diamond suit and bid the 4-card spade suit.



With 4/4 shape regardless of the strength, responder bypasses the diamonds and bid the major suit.
