1C

1NT*

If not a passed hand: Responder shows 8 - 10 HCP and denies holding a 4-card major and 4-card diamond suit. With less than 8 HCP responder may temporize by bidding a 3-card diamond suit.

If a passed hand: Responder shows 6 to 10 HCP and denies holding a 4-card major and a 4-card diamond suit.

1C(1D)

2C(2D)*

1H(1S)

Usually shows a 6-card club(diamond) suit and an unbalanced hand, sometimes may have to rebid a 5-card club(diamond) suit when no other bid is convenient. Exception: 1D - 1S - 2C, with   S   HHHH   DDDDD   CCC   it is ok to rebid the 3-card club suit rather than a poor 5-card diamond suit.

1C(1D)

3C(3D)

1H(1S)

Depending on partnership agreement:

NO SUCH BID - With a long strong club suit and less than 19+ playing points, opener simply rebids the clubs. With more than 19- playing points opener makes a jump shift  (may be in a false suit).

OR, shows a 6+ clubs with 16+ to 19- playing points.

1C(1D)

4C(4D)**

1H(1S)

A double jump rebid of a minor shows a good 6-card minor and a fit with responder’s major suit (4 good trumps). Virtually all opener’s HCP are in the minor and responder’s major.

1C(1D)

Single Raise*

1H(1S)

Shows minimum hand with 4 trumps, although 3 good trumps are ok if no other bid is convenient.

Responder denies 4 or more hearts (otherwise a Bergen raise is made). Shows 6 to 12- HCP

1H(1S)

2H(2S)*

1H(1S)

Denies holding a 4-card heart suit. With 4/4 or 3/3 shape in diamonds and clubs always bid the clubs, with 3/2 shape always bid the diamonds.

1H

2C(2D)*

1NT

With 4/4 or 3/3 shape in diamonds and clubs always bid the clubs, with 3/2 shape always bid the diamonds. Note with   SSSS   HHHHH   DD   CC   and no extra values for a reverse, bid 2C even though a doubleton.

1H(1S)

2NT*

1NT

Shows balanced hand with 18 to 19 HCP.

1H(1S)

2NT

1NT

3NT

Responder goes to 3NT with anything more than a bare minimum.

1H(1S)

2NT

1NT

Transfer Bid*

Responder’s bids of 3C, 3D or 3H are transfer bids for 3D, 3H or 3S. After opener makes the transfer, responder may pass or bid 3NT and opener may pass or bid the transferred suit at the game level.

1H(1S)

3NT

1NT

Shows hand with 16 to 18 HCP and a solid 6-card heart(spade) suit. Unbid suits not necessarily stopped. Hand shape must be 6/3/2/2 and can’t contain a singleton.

1D

2D

2C

Promises 5+ diamonds (not 6). Always suppress re-bidding a 4-card major. A rebid of a 4-card major denies holding 5+ diamonds. If responder has a 4-card major it will be bid at responder’s next turn. Doesn’t show or deny extra values.

1D

3D

2C

Shows a solid 6+ card suit. Doesn’t show or deny extra values.

1D

2C

Splinter bid. Shows 5 clubs with slam interest.

1D

2NT

2C

Denies 5+ diamonds. Denies a 4-card major. Balanced minimum hand with unbid suits stopped - OR - balanced with 18 to 19 HCP and continue to bid 4NT at the next turn.

1D

3NT

2C

2.6 Opener Bids 1H or 1S - Responder Bids 2/1 (Game Force)

Note: Reverses and jump shift rebids by opener are off. A “reverse” after a 2/1 bid should not be made with less than 12+ or 13 HCP.

1H

1S

With a hand with opening values and 5/4, 6/5 (but not 5/5) shape in spades and clubs(diamonds) responder bids 1S then at next turn rebids the clubs(diamonds).

With a weak hand responder rebids the spades.

1H

2C(2D)

Game force. Responder shows at least 4 clubs(diamonds) and could have a spade suit.

With 4/4 shape in spades and clubs(diamonds) bid 2C(2D). Responder does not rebid spades at next turn since this will show an unbalanced hand.

With 4/5, 4/6, 5/5 or 5/6 shape in spades and clubs(diamonds) responder bids 2C(2D) then at next turn bid spades. This shows an unbalanced hand with more clubs(diamonds) than spades or 5 spades and 5 clubs(diamonds).

1H(1S)

Raise Responder

2C(2D)

Shows 5 clubs(diamonds) or a very good 4-card suit. Doesn’t show or deny extra values.

Up ...

God bless yeye

Charlie,

Yeye's health is really my (and I think all of our bridge family) most concerns these days. You brought us a relatively good news, Thanks very much. I hope that Yeye will recovery soon.

You are right, we should help each other. Few of us have relatives here. If we don't help us, who will do?

Takeout Double

After opponents have opened the bidding and your partner has not made a bid other than pass. The regular takeout double announces that you have support for the unbid suits, especially the unbid major(s). The purpose is to compete for the hand and to describe your hand to partner.

Note: Most players take a double of opponent’s bid as a takeout through the 4 Diamond level. Higher bids by the opponents are for penalty.

There are two kinds of hands suitable for takeout doubles. If these criteria are not met, overcall instead of doubling.

1. The regular takeout double:

You have from a good 10 HCP (sometimes less) to 16 HCP and the proper shape.

You are usually short in the opponent’s suit.

You have support for the unbid major(s) and maybe for the other unbid suits.

Never make a takeout double with shortness in a unbid major. If possible, overcall instead.

Never make a takeout double with a void in an unbid suit. If possible, overcall instead.

2. The “big” takeout double:

You have at least 17 HCP and a hand too good to overcall.

“Proper shape” is not required as in the regular takeout double.

You announce this type of hand on your next turn by bidding your own suit or NT instead of normally supporting your partner’s answering bid.

Responses:

Partner assumes you have a regular takeout double and bids his longest unbid suit, or NT if a good hand (has opponent’s suit well stopped and some outside strength, but no 4-card major). If partner has a 4-card unbid major and a 5-card unbid minor, he bids the major suit first.

A non-jump = 0 - 8 distributional points.

A jump bid = 9 - 11 distributional points

A cuebid = 12+ distributional points

Negative Double

Used When partner opens the bidding and RHO overcalls. Allows responder to introduce his suit(s) into the auction at a low level

For the responder to introduce a major at the two level:

Must have 10 HCP

At least a 5-card suit

For the responder to introduce a minor at the two level:

Must have 10 HCP

At least a 4-card suit

The negative double shows no upper limit in strength. Minimum strength depends on the level at which the double is made:

One-Level - six or seven points minimum

Two-Level - eight points minimum

Three-Level - 10+ points minimum

Doubles are “negative”  up to a bid of 3S by RHO. Otherwise the double is for penalties.

Example:

[ 1C                (1D)                Double.....

Responder promises both majors, at least 4-4. If you have one major, bid it, you are only at the one level.

Example:

[ 1C/1D                                              (1H                  )Double.....

Responder promises four spades. Bid 1S with five.

Note: Many partnerships will bid 1S with four at the one-level.

Example:

[ 1C/1D                      (1S)                Double.....

Responder promises four or more hearts. With five and 10 HCP bid 2H.

Michael Q Bid

Opponents open the bidding. You have 5 - 5 shape with both majors or the unbid major and a minor. To better compete immediately cue bid openers suit.

Used when you have:

A weak hand (less than 11 points)

Or, a strong hand (15 or more points)

With an intermediate hand (11 - 14 points)

Bid the higher ranking

Then bid the lower ranking

Note: In the case where you have the unbid major and a minor, partner may ask for the minor by bidding 2 NT*.

* = bid must be alerted
