waiting at loby for elevator, a guy was talking in English with his friends. while we got onboard, I asked that guy 'which floor' he was going as I was in front of the panel. To my astonishment, he replied: 'I dont speak English'.

Anybody know how to response in this case?

I know though, there is always small thinking person in this world.

Merci beaucoup, Laurent, de vos réponses. J’étudie français par lisant les journaux. Toutefois il y a d’expressions que je ne peux pas comprendre.

“It is worth to read that novel”, 据说是错的, 正确的应该是“It is worth while to read that novel”. 有谁能解说一下, 为什么要加 while?

I think it should be "worthwhile"(adj) instead of "worth while".

I think both "worth while" and "worthwhile" are correct.

“Worth” is attributed as a half-preposition by many linguists, though the dictionaries say it is an adj. Like all the prepositions, half-preposition must take something as its object called “prepositional object”. In your 1st sentence, “It is worth to read that novel”, there is no object for “worth” as the infinitive “to read that novel” is the real subject of that sentence. In your 2nd sentence, “it is worth while to read that novel”, “while” functions as the object of the half-preposition “worth”. The word “while” has no meaning in that structure. It only meets the grammatical or structural requirements.
