“Worth” is attributed as a half-preposition by many linguists, though the dictionaries say it is an adj. Like all the prepositions, half-preposition must take something as its object called “prepositional object”. In your 1st sentence, “It is worth to read that novel”, there is no object for “worth” as the infinitive “to read that novel” is the real subject of that sentence. In your 2nd sentence, “it is worth while to read that novel”, “while” functions as the object of the half-preposition “worth”. The word “while” has no meaning in that structure. It only meets the grammatical or structural requirements. |
