首先讲讲文化差异，许多鬼佬在找朋友的当时都认为自己是很认真的（发自内心的），但是他们考虑得很简单，就是讲feel，feel对了，3分钟就会要你做她的女朋友，当然，是以非常热情、nice、友善的态度。这样的情况如果你也是个浪漫主义者，或者是只在乎曾经拥有的人，那就一拍即合了。可是受中国文化培养长大的人往往不能真正做到这点，时间久了，你就会渴求现实稳定的归宿，从这方面考虑，就不乐观了。文化和生活习惯的差异是客观存在的，一厢情愿地去适应对大多数人不现实，双方交往的期望值也不同，比如你会认为双方今后的生活应该交融共享，但可能他的观点只是分享情感和肉体，其他是属于各自私人的东西，而且感觉不对了就各散东西。所以许多鬼佬讲的serious和我们理解的实际上是不同的。
其次，讲话有礼是受人尊重的，作为一般社交对象是好的。但并不等于这样的人就一定值得深交，许多鬼佬表面彬彬有礼，可是内心的价值观才是最重要的，否则也只是表面之交。性情相投的人在一起大碗喝酒，一起骂骂咧咧反而更开心，但这样的人不易交。平常在外谁不是彬彬有礼，可是能有几个知心？有的人讲话比较直，也许会刺痛你，但没准对你是好事。
在我看来，一个在东方文化培养下长大的人（思想基本成熟、定型）如果想彻底融入西方文化，放弃自身的根是不现实的，也是痛苦的。当然交交朋友，享受享受多元文化的乐趣是挺好的。
还有，并不等于会讲流利的洋文，讲话斯文，见到苍蝇老鼠就尖叫就是真正的上等人了。阿根廷作家博尔赫斯讲过一个笑话，说她妹妹学法语，后来看见苍蝇，就用法语惊叫。孩子妈在一边说道：叫什么叫，没见过苍蝇吗？你就是在苍蝇中长大的！
