Hi, Lio,
1) The prices CAA gives you are the "fair market prices". However actual selling prices will depend on the supply/demand situation. If there are not enough used cars on the market, then the prices will be higher than what CAA gives you.
If you are buying a used car from car dealer, then the price will be a lot higher than CAA's book price. So try to buy used car from private sales.
personaly, I agree with CAA's book prices.
2) I just bought a car from private sales (from Gazette), Nissan Sentra 92, 180,000 kms and I paid $ 3,200. The car is in A1 condition and a little rust. CAA book price is $ 4000. Therefore, it is possible to get good prices but not from a dealer who usually makes higher margins.
When you buy from private sales (Saturday's Gazette), make sure that you have the car inspected at a trustworthy garage before you conclude the deal - because you have no way to know if the car is in good condition. I recommend Garage Phil Bailey in Lachine (see my posting on the website earlier). I always bring my car there and they are very serious people - always do a great job. Their price is not cheap ($ 64/hr) but they never rip you off. They are very honest.
