Taiwan is Republic of China and vice versa. Don't you think so? I wouldn't be ashamed to call my nationality ROC except only that most foreigners know nothing about ROC.
But when I explain to them that I came from Taiwan, they all grin broadly and relaxingly. Wherever they came from, be it Southeast Asia countries, ex-Soviet Union countries, or Quebec, they all know that Taiwan is a free and democratic country vibrating with a dynamic economy, IT industry, and civilized, educated citizens. Even the Canadians envied that Taiwan exports high tech products while Canada exports mostly natural resources.
Sometimes, when I got the time, I further explained to some senior citizens here that Taiwan is Free China. They would look at me with not only admiration and respect, but also with a deep appreciation. An appreciation that Free China stood with the free world in those Cold War years at the frontier against Communism and made huge sacrifices and contributions to the Free World. Free China, now Taiwan, is an honorable ally to them.
So I wouldn't be ashamed to call my nationality Taiwan either. In fact, I am proud of being a Taiwanese. Wouldn't you? Or do you insist that you are a Free Chinese? I am not prejudiced against Free Chinese except that I will be having a hard time explaining to people what that means. Since that's a huge task to do and most people have a short attention span and my English may not be good enough to help me accomplish the mission even if they have the time, I choose to call myself a Taiwanese.
I didn't expect you to write such a long reply, but yea, I get what you want to say. |
